THE PHILIPPINES

Widespread poverty is the single most important challenge facing The Philippines. About 80% of the country’s poorest people live in rural areas, located deep in the mountains and the rice fields. Most of these areas don’t have electricity and depend on kerosene lanterns, which give off dangerous, toxic fumes. In addition, these areas have high illiteracy rates because children are forced to drop out of school and work in the fields to provide more income for the family.

In the spring of 2012, Energizer® and One Million Lights brought some positivity to this situation with a donation of Energizer® solar lights. By providing a sustainable solution to the lack of electricity, children will be able to continue their studies at night and avoid the inhalation of fumes from the kerosene lamps.
