We know that men and women are more likely to be concerned about their personal safety when it gets dark earlier. Follow these simple measures to stay safe:
General Be Safe Be Seen Rules
- Let someone know your plan for the evening including where you are going, how you are getting there and back, the route you are taking and what time you will be back
- Carry a mobile phone. Make sure it's topped up with credit, charged and programmed with emergency number including taxi companies that you trust, but keep it out of sight
- Carry a personal attack alarm such as the combined Energizer Personal Alarm and LED Torch. It's light weight and easily clips on to your bag or belt
Walking and Exercising
- Resist putting your headphones on
- Walk with confidence
- Stick to well-lit roads with pavements
- Avoid taking short cuts through dark alleys, parks or across waste ground
- Walk facing the traffic
- Carry your bag close to you and carry your house keys in your pocket
- Keep valuables such as jewellery and MP3 players out of sight
- Cross the road if you think someone is following you. If you are still worried, get to the nearest place where there are other people, a pub or anywhere with lots of lights on and call the police
- If you regularly go jogging or cycling, try to vary your route and time
- Wear a light such as the Energizer Spot LED Multi Use Light. It's lightweight, great for jogging and ideal if you don't like headlights
Public Transport and Taxis
- Stay away from isolated bus stops
- On an empty bus, sit near the driver or conductor
- On a train, sit in a compartment where there are several other people
- Never agree to travel in an unlicensed vehicle with an unlicensed driver
- Always book a taxi or licensed mini cab through a known and trusted company
- Check that the taxi or licensed mini cab is the one you ordered. Ask for a description of the car and check this when it arrives. Also ask for the name of the driver beforehand
- When you get to your destination at night, ask the driver to wait until you are inside
- Always sit behind the driver in the back seat
Driving
- Carry a torch in the car at all times such as the Energizer X Focus Torch or 3 LED Headlight
- Park in a well-lit, busy place. Look around before you get out. If you're parking in the daylight but coming back for your car at night, think about how things will look in the dark
- Have your key ready when you go back to your car and use a key ring with a light such as the Energizer Hi Tech LED Keyring
- Always carry a fully topped up and charged mobile phone
- Make sure you have enough money and petrol
- If you think you are being followed, flash your lights, sound your horn and keep driving until you come to a busy place
